Free Range and Fancy Feet

Many of you already know that we have added to our family… Michael bought chicks and ducks.  Well the ducks, Michael bought because I told him about when I was younger my parents bought us girls ducks and it was pretty cool.  They would follow us around the yard and it was neat.  Little did I remember what a mess they were.  Needless to say, we are less ducks now.  The ducks went to our local pond where they can either fulfill the circle of life or make duck friends and live a happy life where I am not required to clean and take care of them five times a day.
However we do have two chicks… now being duck free and just having the chicks I am loving them.  They are super cool!  They are so docile.  The boys can pick them up and they will just sit in the boys laps.  They are not nearly as messy as their former coop mates.  Being that we have a huge yard with plenty of space I have been letting the chicks out to be “free range”  and they love it.  Somethings that are so neat to watch is them scratch and dust bath… it is amazing to me that they have never had a mother to show them how to do those things and God created them to just know, that was what they were made to do.  It is pretty amazing if you ask me.
So, we have two chicks, they are New Hampshire Reds.  They are bred to be layers and meat birds.  They have a great temperament thus far.  Now that we have just the two of them there is a huge part of me that wishes we would have gotten a few more… next year I think we might get one or two more of them and then some Plymouth Rocks too.  We sure are enjoying them.
Our little ladies are about five weeks old.  Supposedly by the age of four months they can start laying eyes… we are anxiously awaiting that!
