So this is an odd picture I know. I have a few projects around the house that I have left over from when my parents were here and a few more that I have added as well. Two of my projects involve wood staining… I am more of a wood stain kind of girl, not to say I can’t admire a good paint job but I prefer wood colors. I have tried two store bought stains and been rather disappointed in them. A few of my favorite decorating blogs that I read have mentioned doing a natural stain. I did some research and I figure it couldn’t hurt. This is a jar of homemade stain, well not stain yet but, fermenting stain. In this jar I have two steel wool pads grade 0000 submerged in vinegar (half apple cider and half white). This little concoction will ferment for 24 hours and then will be ready. Tomorrow I will prime my wood pieces with steeped black tea cooled by brushing and then follow it up with this jar of stain. From the pictures I have seen of this staining method the wood comes out a honey antiqued color… my favorite! So we shall see. I have two frames that I will be working with. Wish me luck!
So a little follow up… I got side tracked with getting this stain on my wood pieces because well the pieces of wood that I had previously cut when my dad was here were not perfect 40 degree angles so… I just used the stain on a piece of scrap wood after 72 hours of the stain sitting. Needless to say the longer the stain sits the darker the colors gets. I will say that I will use the same technique again though. The stain does not stink, it is cheap and easy and it is just the right amount of antique and honey for my liking!
