We live in a time where friends are more virtual than real. I have been seeing a lot of posts on Facebook lately of people being “de-friended” or being “hidden”. If these terms would have been talked about even ten years ago there would be a strange look. Now if you say that you have de-friended someone everyone knows exactly what you are talking about.
I will admit that about two weeks ago I went through my Facebook friends and deleted about thirty people. These people have done nothing wrong per-say however if I have not talked to them in real life in a while then chances are I am not interested in hearing their every detail of their day…what they ate, when then are at the gym, how cute their puppy is… you get the point.
I know that all the people that I have currently on my “friends” list are not people that I would be interested in sitting down and having a conversation with but the bottom line is that I don’t need a lot of the negative posts that some people put up. Call it what you may, but I would rather not be bombarded with your drama!
Unfortunately there are people that I have seen defriend me and I thought, “bummer” however the bottom line is, they probably were not that great of friends in the real world and therefore, it is their loss not mine. I think so often the Facebook world is taking away from the real connections and therefore what is the point of having three hundred friends on Facebook when none of them are people that you would call up in your every day life to chat with. So although my Facebook will boast two hundred plus people… there are about fifty or sixty of them that I would love to sit down and have a chat with… not via Facebook, email or phone… but face to face!
I know that some people are fair weather Facebookers… and for that I totally understand. The only reason that I have remained on Facebook all these years is for my family and friends that live away from me. Incidentally that is the only reason that I have a blog too, an opportunity for my friends and family to have a sneak peak into the life of us crazy Kulows. So with that in mind I sat down a few weeks ago and thought… who do I want to see, who would I be interested in getting updates from and who really matters to me… thus my Facebook purging began.
