Beautiful Mess

156014You know those days that you should have just stayed in bed and skipped?  Well today was one of those days… well sort of!  This morning I woke up to find an empty bottle of hand sanitizer.  Big brother informed me that middle brother drank it… drank it!  I immediately questioned middle brother in the truth of the statement and he said, “Yep, I drank it!”  Really child?!?!  I immediately sent him to the bathroom to go to the bathroom and then got him a very large glass of water and had him begin drinking.  I looked at the bottle to discover that he had in fact drank it all, it was bone dry.  The warning label on the bottle said seek immediate medical attention if product is ingested.  In my head I began going through the possibilities… I called hubby to see what he thought.  I knew that if I was to call the doctor that they would make me call poison control and a few years ago our contact with poison control was horrific.  I wanted to avoid that at all costs but I did not know when middle brother drank the sanitizer  he said that he did it in the middle of the night – that means anytime between 10:30 when I went to bed and 6:30 when he woke up!  That is a long stretch of time.  Brother was not complaining of a upset tummy or a headache, so I was not too sure.  After talking with hubby I looked up the ingredients on the internet and their side effects if ingested.  Needless to say brother’s weight did not even come up on the weight chart of measuring equivalent… the one thing I saw was 2-4 ounces of hand sanitizer for a 50 pound child was equal to 4-5 shots of hard alcohol.  My thought process went something like this… Okay I weigh a lot more that 50 pounds and 4-5 shots of hard alcohol would put me in a world of hurt… Get on the phone with the doctor immediately!  So I called our doctor and he told me that I should call poison control and then take him to the emergency room.  Wait a minute… emergency room?!?  So the doctor’s office dialed poison control and then patched me through… between the two calls I was on the phone for 40 minutes.  My interactions with poison control was rather positive!  The nurse explained that if he is not showing any signs of being “drunk” than he is probably okay.  She informed me that I was to watch him for the next four hours to make sure that he does not become dizzy, lethargic, or vomits.  After I was done talking with her I called hubby… did I mention that I did not call him immediately after finding out my research on the internet?  Well, I didn’t – four calls while on the phone for 40 minutes with the doctor and poison control had the hubby in a tizzy!  Worry for middle brother made my conversation with hubby rough, my tears flowed, his frustration boomed… all in all a rough start to a Thursday MOPS morning!
Thankfully I had MOPS to go to, middle brother sat in the MOPS room with me and I kept an eye on him and everything was just fine.  Our discussion time at our table was “Explain a beautiful mess that has taken place in your life in the last week.”  At a table with nine other moms, I was in good company – I shared my morning, they laughed and consoled me and then they shared some good stories too.  Just a few that made my morning not seem so insurmountable were… one lady’s son decided to pee in the heating vent in his bedroom… carpets cleaned, vents sanitized will all equal about $300.  Another mom shared that her daughter has been begging to go fishing, they have not made it out yet so her daughter decided to go fishing in their beta’s fish tank and very proudly presented her mommy with the catch of the day… their pet beta fish.  Another mom shared that her daughter decided to cut her hair that was mid back and gave herself a “gloriously righteous mullet”.  Another mom shared that her son thought it might be fun to stick his chewing gum up his nose, needless to say he did not think it much fun!  I am so grateful for a group of ladies that I have been surrounded by to encourage me and make me laugh after such a rough morning!
As I was leaving MOPS one of my friends said, “Well the day can only go up!”  She was mostly right… the rest of the day I decided to take the day off, the boys and I came home and had lunch and then we napped.  After nap time we played in the front yard with the neighbor kids and then had munchie dinner.  I got a call from hubby saying that he was going to be home sooner than he had originally thought, which was going to be early morning, so I thought great!  Hubby gets home and does some work outside in preparation for the snow that was expected tomorrow and then comes into the laundry room as I am washing clothes, takes off his socks to reveal three broken toes.  When hubby said he was coming home early he never once mentioned that he was hurt today!  Come to find out a cement tube rolled and he went to stop it and it ran over his foot.  The swelling and the bruising is almost too much for me to handle looking at.
The Kulows really should have just skipped yesterday!
