Book Worm

6368110This picture of big brother is so much more than a picture of my son, it represents my son devouring a book at the age of seven.  I was never good at reading, I honestly hated reading for a long time, it took me so long to read a page and then I would not have actually understood what I just read so I would have to go back and read it again.  I remember for a long time crying when it came time to the reading portion of my homework.  It was not until I was entering seventh grade that I truly remember reading a book and thinking, “hey this is kind of neat”.  I remember thinking it was amazing that a book could make you laugh and cry and venture to new and exciting places.  To this day I have to “work” to read.  I can get through a books but the starting has always been challenging.  At the end of the school year I was talking with some friends and was asking if they had any book recommendations for big brother.  Three friends adamantly agreed that “The Magic Tree House” series was where we should start.  Big brother has been showing great interest in reading and has enjoyed the simple books that I have on our shelves at home but I was really wanting something to challenge him and “catch” the reading bug.  Well, this series has done the trick!  Big brother has been flying through them and is so excited to get the next book.  Since June 1st the boys and I have been part of the Jeffco Library reading program.  The week before the kickoff I got online and reserved the first two books in the series thinking it would take him a while to get through them.  Silly me!  He grabbed a flash light and hunkered down in his bed the first night we brought the books home and finished the first book in about four hours.  The second one much the same.  We had to wait a week for the next books to come in and then I borrowed three of the books.  Same thing with the first two, they were done in a matter of hours and he sat at my bed side telling me of all the adventures.  Mommy moment here… I was so proud and amazed that he read the books and that he understood everything from the little detail.  The next three books we have been waiting for, for almost two weeks and they just came in yesterday.  After picking them up from the library I “mysteriously” got an email from Amazon saying that the “Magic Tree House” series was on sale.  After talking with hubby he agreed that purchasing the set made sense.  The whole box series came in the mail tonight and big brother is ecstatic.  I think we may loose him for the coming days but, heck – what better way to loose your child then in the pages of a good book!  So if you are looking for a good series for your young reader, I totally encourage you picking up the set.  Yes, I know that there is the conversation that bound books are on their way of going out but I think the bound book definitely has a place in a child’s library.  My argument with hubby was that we have three sons who will enjoy reading them and then maybe some day their children will get to read them too, much like hubby and having big brother read Frog and Toad, it is a bonding opportunity that can’t be missed
