The Call to Disconnect

9263257In the last few months hubby and I followed through on something that we have tossed around for a year or so, but we have disconnected.  I know that sounds ominous, and it truly is not.  We have made our house a no screen house from Sunday night through Thursday night.  That means that we are not sitting in front of computers or the television in the evenings.  We have been reading books and playing games as a family.
During this “no screen” time we have seen some pretty incredible benefits.  Our boys have been sleeping better at night, they are falling asleep easier and sleeping longer.  Our boys have been playing better together, they are using their imaginations and are making forts and being little boys.  Big brother has been reading through his many garage sale books that we picked up over the summer.  Hubby has been spending time with the family, talking with the boys and just being present.  Hubby and I have been talking, not just the schedule updates but chatting about life and thoughts.
I have to say if you are considering a no screen time in your home I think you will be super pleased.  Trust me there are nights that I have wanted to just turn on the television and let brothers sit in front of it, but I have resisted the urge and it has paid off.  As of late brothers and I have been playing games.  It is hard in the evenings to muster the energy to play a game and be present for the boys but I know that they will remember it.
In disconnecting from screens we really have connected with each other.  Seeing the benefits in our home has made me feel like disconnecting more might be a real and good option for me!
